Mission Statement
The Malaysian AIDS Council (MAC) is committed to creating an environment free from the negative impacts of HIV/AIDS for Malaysia and her people, through and with its Partner Organizations by strengthening and mobilizing them, as well as giving them proper representation.
Objectives
We Complement, Supplement and Support the Government's Efforts, with Coordination by the Ministry of Health
|
The Council
In 1992, an initiative by the Ministry of Health brought HIV/AIDS-related NGOs under one umbrella in order to maximize their efforts and to ensure that limited resources were used as efficiently as possible. Thus the Malaysian AIDS Council (MAC) was formed.
The Malaysian AIDS Council
MAC has expanded over the last ten years from a clerical staff comprising of only 2 individuals to over 20 employees. An Executive Committee (EXCO), comprising of ten elected representatives from MAC's Partner Organizations helms the organization. The EXCO governs all major policy-making decisions and oversees MAC's strategic direction.
ICAAP 1999
In recognition of its capabilities and determination, MAC was the first NGO to be given the task of organizing the Fifth International Congress on AIDS in Asia and the Pacific (ICAAP). ICAAP is a biennial event and is one of the most important congresses on the world calendar for the gathering of ideas on HIV/AIDS. The Fifth ICAAP was held in Kuala Lumpur on 23-27 October 1999 carrying the theme 'The Next Millennium - Taking Stock and Moving Forward'.
Services
Coordinating NGO Efforts & Capacity Building
MAC streamlines the work of its 42 partner organizations by eliminating unnecessary duplication of work as well as overlapping of programs. MAC also provides these organizations with the necessary training, funds and other resources to implement effective HIV/AIDS programs within various communities in Malaysia.
Advocacy
As one of the main contributors to government policy on HIV/AIDS, MAC presents the views of its partner organizations and the concerns of Malaysians living with HIV/AIDS to the government. MAC holds annual dialogues with the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development.
MAC also reviews relevant chapters within the Malaysian Laws that could hinder or assist with the management of the epidemic. As a result, the Malaysian AIDS Charter was published in 1995 to set out the rights and responsibilities of all sectors of society in relation to HIV/AIDS.
Prevention & Education
MAC actively promotes education on HIV/AIDS in order to prevent the further spread of HIV in Malaysia. These efforts consist of workshops, talks and forums in a variety of settings, public exhibitions, as well as mobilization programs during International AIDS Memorial Day and World AIDS Day.
The outreach and peer education programs of partner organizations further supplement the Council's prevention activities. The Malaysian AIDS Council Resource Center was established in 1995 as a clearinghouse to collect and disseminate all available information on HIV/AIDS locally as well as at the global level. The Resource Center also accommodates a library for people of all ages and backgrounds doing research on the subject.
Care, Support & Treatment
In addition to facilitating the programs of its partner organizations such as halfway houses, drop-in centers and support networks, MAC also provides direct assistance to People Living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHAs) via its Outreach Program as well as its Treatment Information Project. Special funds are channeled into direct Financial Assistance for HIV infected and affected people, which in this case would include young children.
Scope of Activities
MAC and its partner organizations are involved in the following activities:
